Places we are visiting here:

Ciudadela de Pamplona

We are going to discover one of the most beautiful fortress of Spain: Ciudadela de Pamplona. This military building has a special form of a star. Besides having its origin in the Renaissance, nowadays a big part of the building is still well conserved, and is used as a recreational park by the local citizens.

Monumento al Encierro

When walking around the city of Pamplona, we are going to make a stop in a special monument called Monumento al Encierro. This monument represents an encierro (running of the bulls across the city) of San Fermín.

Plaza de toros

We are also visiting one of the most known bullrings of Spain, due to the importance of San Fermín. Every year the best bullfighters from Spain comes to Plaza de toros to face the bulls.

Casco Viejo y la Plaza del Castillo

The Old Town of Pamplona is probably the most beautiful part of the city, conserving the essence of a medieval city and the memory of the Kingdom of Navarre. Years ago, this part of the city was surrounded by a defense wall. Nowadays, it´s still possible to see parts of this historical wall. Following the main street, we will arrive to Plaza del Castillo, the heart of the Casco Viejo of Pamplona. In this place, Ernest Hemingway used to drink coffee while he was writing about San Fermín and Pamplona.

Cathedral of Santa María la Real

In the Old Town we can also find the Cathedral of Santa María la Real, probably the most important building of the city. Inside the Cathedral there is a huge collection of historical and artistic treasures.

Palacio Municipal

The City Hall of Pamplona is an example of civil baroque architecture of the city, and it was actually built twice.

Urederra*:
In case of High rains, we will do the plan B, Estella.

In 1987 Urederra was declared a nature reserve, and it is one of the most incredible sites in Navarre. The way to Urederra is a natural route plagued by different flora and fauna, that makes it especially beautiful. In the Urederra spring there are waterfalls and natural water pools. Urederra is a protected place with an entrance before arrival, and it has a limited capacity of visitors.

PLAN B, Estella:

Palace of the Kings of Navarra:

In Estella-Lizarra, in the square of San Martín, where the memory of this medieval city formerly populated by Franks and Jews still shines in all its splendour, stands the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, also known as the Palace of the Dukes of Granada de Ega. It is the only civil Romanesque building in Navarre and was declared a National Monument in 1931. It was built during the last third of the 12th century. Facing towards the church of San Pedro de la Rúa, it offers a magnificent facade with two narrative chapitals, one of which represents the battle between Roland and the giant Farragut. It currently houses the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum.

Church of San Pedro De la Rua:

In the centre of the old mediaeval city of Estella-Lizarra stands the church of San Pedro de la Rúa. It is the largest church in the city and its 12th-century cloister is considered one of the most valuable, in terms of Romanesque sculptural richness in Navarre.

This church also reveals a beautiful 18th-century porch with lobed arches and rich ornaments, that reflects the Arabic influences.

Church of Holy sepulchre:

The city of Estella-Lizarra, an important place on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago in the Central Zone of Navarre, is home to a large number of religious buildings, which emerged from the cultural and economic 'boom' of the 12th century. One of them, the church of the Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre), was left unfinished. The buildings facade is one of the finest examples of Gothic sculpture in Navarre.

Building work of the church started in the 12th century. It was interrupted in the 14th century, so the ambitious initial project of a three-nave church similar to San Pedro de la Rúa, San Juan or San Miguel (all constructed towards the end of the Romanesque period in Estella-Lizarra) was left unfinished.

The Fountain of Wine:

Do you know the fountain of wine of the Camino de Santiago?

The fountain that was build years ago in the town of Ayegui, Navarra, adds another example to the Italian pilgrimage route between Rome and Ortona.

If you are a regular pilgrim and have traveled the French Way from Saint Jean Pied de Port perhaps you know it, but we know for sure that many of you don´t know the wine fountain in the Navarran town of Ayegui, where the pilgrim Estella passes after leaving the stage to Los Arcos. This particular fountain is build on one of the walls of Bodegas Irache, overlooking the Camino de Santiago, and it has two taps, one of water and one of wine. And, it´s completely free.
