This Natural Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. With more than 42.500 hectares, Las Bárdenas Reales is a huge desert where you can find amazing cliffs, plateaus and isolated hills. Also, the hit tv show, Game of Thrones filmed a part of the 6th season in this amazing landscape. The park is characterized by its semi-desert landscapes, which are very unusual for the region, and in startling contrast to the lush, green landscapes of northern Navarre. These landscapes are the result of a very special climate made up of hot summers, cold winters and long dry periods interrupted by heavy rain. There is also a particular wind current that runs through the area, called “cierzo.” The difference of pressure between the Cantabrian and the Mediterranean Seas generate a current of strong wind that flows along with the Ebro River. The “cierzo” wind is responsible for the unique, abrupt landscapes, canyons and plateaus, produced by its erosion on the soil, which mainly consists of clay, chalk and sandstone.

OLITE

Here are some photos from Olite:

The sleek and harmonious silhouette of the Castle-Palace stands out against the skyline of Olite, a small town in the centre of Navarre just 42 kilometres south of Pamplona that was the seat of the Royal Court of the kingdom in the Middle Ages. The thick walls and crenelated towers of the Palace were home to monarchs and princes. Declared a national monument in 1925, it is the best example of civil Gothic architecture in Navarre and one of the most significant in Europe. A walk through the narrow streets of Olite will take you back to ancient time filled with noble stone houses with coats or arms on their facades and sumptuous wooden eaves, mediaeval galleries and splendid churches as well as the Roman wall surrounding the town.

Real Palace of Olite

The Palace of the Kings of Navarre of Olite or Royal Palace of Olite is a castle-palace in the town of Olite, in Navarra, Spain. It was one of the seats for the Court of the Kingdom of Navarre since the reign of Charles III "the Noble" until its union with Castile (1512). This monument was quite damaged (except for the church) in 1813 by a fire caused by General Espoz y Mina during the Napoleonic French Invasion with the aim that it would be not occupied by French troops. It was largely restored in 1937 with works that lasted for 30 years giving it back its original appearance. Nevertheless, miscellaneous architectural decoration of its interior, and the outside gardens, were lost. (The entrance to the Palace is optional and is 3.50 euros)

Pozo de Hielo

From the seventeenth century, Pozo de Hielo is a well excavated in the soil at about 8 m depth and was used to store ice throughout the year, for it to be crushed making layers separated with straw.

Carlos III Square

One of the most important square and where many of the monuments and noble buildings of Olite are concentrated. An important building in the square is the Tower of the Chapitel, which was part of the walled precinct and was one of the entrance to the city. In the Middle Ages, it was a market where all the grain that came into the city was stored. Carlos III bought the building and had a clock built to hang it in the tower to be used as a public clock.

The church of Santa Maria la Real

The church of Santa María la Real de Sangüesa, declared a National Monument in 1889, displays a magnificent portal, an authentic altarpiece in stone, considered one of the top works of roman architecture in Spain. Here is represented the Final Judgment. With slender line and medium proportions, the church was constructed between centuries XII and XIV and its style corresponds to the transition from Romanesque to Gothic.

The Chapitel Tower

The Tower of the Chapitel is, after the Royal Palace, Olite's most emblematic civil architecture building. In its origin it formed part of the Roman walled enclosure and was one of the two entrance. In the XIII century a medieval Gothic work was overlaid where a passage of pointed arches opens.
